Botox or Botulinum Toxin is an effective method for removing facial wrinkles that appear over time or due to face expressions and gestures, by relaxing the musculature of the face that causes these wrinkles. The risk of side effects is very low. Very small doses of a purified extract of “botulinum toxin type A” are injected with extremely fine needles.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
The treatment is very simple, it consists of injecting a small amount of “botulinum toxin type A” into the muscles whose contraction causes the wrinkle that we want to remove, thus blocking the nerve impulse that reaches that muscle. As a result, the muscle weakens, the skin that covers the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles gradually disappear.
Its application is practically painless, the patient will notice only a slight redness of the area to be treated due to the punctures. The results appear two or three days after the application, completing its effect after about ten days depending on the patient.
In Spain, the use of “botulinum toxin type A” is only authorized in the upper third of the face: wrinkles of the forehead, frown and periocular area.
This toxin allows to recover a younger appearance, smoothing wrinkles and fine lines
Results in a more relaxed expression effect
Restores the luminosity to the face.
Revitalizes the gaze immediately after application.
It prevents the fracture of the skin that is caused by deep wrinkles over time.
IN WHICH AREAS CAN BOTOX BE APPLIED?
Botulinum toxin can only be applied in the upper third of the face.
Frontal wrinkles: those annoying wrinkles caused by the contraction of the frontal muscle.
Periorbital wrinkles: better known as crow’s feet, these are expression wrinkles originated by the contraction of the orbicular muscle of the eyes.
Frown wrinkles: this is undoubtedly the most demanded area when applying botulinum toxin.
HOW LONG DO BOTOX EFFECTS LAST?
Botox results are visible approximately 4 to 6 months. Depending on each patient’s metabolism, there may be small variations. After several applications of this toxin the effects may begin to be longer and last up to eight months.
It is not advisable to apply this botulinum toxin in pregnant or breastfeeding women, nor is it advisable to apply in people who have significant neuromuscular diseases that may increase the effect of Botox, such as myasthenia gravis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It should also not be used in active infected areas.
CARES AFTER THE APPLICATION OF BOTOX
After the application of botulinum toxin, patients do not require great care, immediately returning to their daily life. However, patients must avoid rubbing their faces or exaggerating facial movements within the first 4 hours, to avoid movements of the injected medicine to non-desired areas.
It is also advisable not to play sports for the first 24 hours.
WHERE IS THE TREATMENT PERFORMED?
This treatment must be performed by a professional and it should be done in a consultation following all the appropriate sterilization and hygiene standards. The application time varies from patient to patient, but usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.
